Living Graveyard
Ecumenical Peace Institute; EB-COSSI; Berkeley Women in Black; Women for Peace
October 16, Tuesday, 12:00 - 1:00, at the Oakland Federal Building, 1301 Clay Street, anti-war activists join in the "Living Graveyard."

Covered with white sheets, participants lie on the city sidewalk, far enough apart to allow for pedestrian and wheelchair traffic.

We read the names of the dead of this war, sounding a gong at intervals. This is legal street theater to make visible the reality of the deaths caused by the war, representing the true human cost of the Iraq War -- the U.S. and allied dead and the untold thousands of Iraqis who have died in the conflict.

Giving out black ribbons for Iraq Moratorium. [More info,_Contact,_Updates,_Comments_and_Reports]

2:30 p.m. - Gather at starting points in Burlingame and San Jose
3:00 p.m. - Peace Procession begins
5:00 p.m. - Closing rally at Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto

Southern Starting Point: Calvary United Methodist Church, 729 Morse St., San Jose (enter on Naglee)
End Point/Rally: Unitarian Universalist Church, 505 E. Charleston Rd., Palo Alto (Wheelchair accessible)

Rally keynote speaker: Ray McGovern, Former CIA Analyst, Leading war critic

Also featuring Karen Meredith of Gold Star Families Speak Out and Iraq War Veterans from Veterans for Peace. Processionistas will gather for snacks and musical greetings from The Raging Grannies before the rally.

A procession of vehicles-cars, hybrids, electric vehicles, bicycles-will travel the length of the Peninsula, starting from points north and south, to symbolize the unity of all of our local communities in saying, "Troops out now!"

Decorate your vehicle with signs and black ribbons (provided at the starting points) to let our neighbors know we all stand together in trying to end the disastrous occupation of Iraq.

We will follow El Camino Real, the original route that connected all of our local communities. El Camino is also a vivid reminder of the devastation brought upon the indigenous population as a result of colonialism, a devastation that is being repeated in Iraq today.

Route maps, approximate schedule, midway joining points, and phone numbers to reach the procession in progress are available at http://peaceandjustice.org/article.php/Iraq_Moratorium_Oct_19

STOP WAFFLING ON THE WAR!"
Peace Resource Center, San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice, Guererro Azteca Peace Project & Activst San Diego
TAKE ACTION TODAY!! 2nd Iraq Moratorium Day is Friday, Oct 19th!

Our focus will be pressuring Congresswoman Susan Davis (D) to defund the war! Tell her to "STOP WAFFLING ON THE WAR!"

Susan Davis can not have it both ways. She says she want to stop the war, she says she supports the troops, she says Bush lied, but she votes for every appropriation, every Presidential request to keep the war going. Tell her to stop waffling! Fund only the withdrawal and reparations, set the date, get out now, & fund recovery for the vets. In SAN DIEGO we ask you to remind Susan Davis of her pledge to stop the war and bring the troops home now.

Go to www.prcsd.org/Iraqmoratorium.htm

and FAX it to Susan Davis with your own comment on it.

what we'll be doing at the action:
throughout the park we'll be holding one or two mock funeral processions as we hand out toy soldiers with messages attached, disseminate flyers about the november action, and inform people about the group discussions we're hosting near the fountain.

callers will also be representing both the dead iraqi civilians and the american soldiers who have been confirmed dead at 20-40 stations throughout the park (for civilians through number because we don't have their names, etc.; for the soldiers their name, date of death, and how they died). the idea is that if you're passing through the park, no matter where you go, you won't be able to ignore the number the loss of life that has accompanied the war.

besides that we'll be engaging people in interviews on video about their experiences with the war, running an sds/Iraq Moratorium table, and advertising for november's action. if you're interested in filming and have a camera, bring it along.

also wear black. we'll be spread throughout the park. a common clothing color will demonstrate a unity to everything that is going on in those two hours. [More info,_Contact,_Updates,_Comments_and_Reports]
