Standing for Peace-- Refusing to Quit
Alliance for Peace and Justice; and Student Action Network
Join us this Friday at Toomer's Corner-4:45pm to 5:45pm. This gathering, on the 3rd Friday of each month, will be one of many across the country that demands a stop to the war in Iraq.

Feel free to bring your own appropriate sign, or use one of ours. You can purchase posterboard across the street at J&M Bookstore at the event. It's that easy! Stand up and be heard! Hope to see you there!

As we yearn for peace, we are painfully aware that our nation waged a pre-emptive, unnecessary, illegal, immoral war on another country. Many thousands are dead, injured, suffering and fleeing, because of us.

Peace is hard work. Stand with others. Signs are available. Or make your own.

Please note the change in time (to allow artists more time for set-up) and be aware that certain street areas of downtown are closed to traffic. If you have time, stay for the Downtown Art Walk. [More info,_Contact,_Updates,_Comments_and_Reports]

Vigil Against Torture

Stop torture! End the torture flights!

Jeppesen is a San Jose company that profits from illegal kidnappings and torture. The company handles the logistics for the CIA's so-called "extraordinary rendition" flights -- torture flights.

This action honors the International Day in Support of the Victims of Torture. June 26 is the anniversary of the effective date of the UN's Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The UN Convention Against Torture clearly states that no country may "extradite a person to another State where there are substantial grounds for believing that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture." The convention entered into effect on June 26, 1987 and was signed by the U.S. in 1988. This means that the CIA’s practice of "extraordinary rendition" -- outsourcing the interrogation of suspected terrorists to countries known to practice torture -- violates U.S. as well as international law.

San Jose-based Jeppesen, a Boeing subsidiary, has been accused of providing logistics for those "extraordinary rendition" flights. The U.S. Justice Department intervened in a lawsuit against Jeppesen, claiming that state secrets would be revealed if the lawsuit were allowed to go ahead. But in July 2006, Jeppesen Managing Director Bob Overby told employees, "We do the torture flights."

Suppose a local company had been accused of sex trafficking or drug running? Wouldn’t there be a general outcry and condemnation? Should law-breakers be able to do business freely in our city? Why is Jeppesen still a respected member of the San Jose business community?

For more than a year, San Jose Peace and Justice Center and other activists in San Jose and on the Peninsula have been organizing protests against Jeppesen, demanding that it cut ties to the CIA and torture flights. Jeppesen has so far refused to respond. Tell Jeppesen: "We don't want torturers in our community! Stop working for the CIA!"

Sir! No Sir! - Free Movie
Free Movie to educate citizens and encourage more participation in the Iraq Moratorium event on Friday.

Sir! no Sir! tells the long suppressed story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam.
This is the story of one of the most vibrant and widespread upheavals of the 1960’s- one that had profound impact on American society yet has been virtually obliterated from the collective memory of that time.

This movie goes very nicely with the IVAW's Winter Soldier Testimonies that have just been placed under oath in DC, as the initial Winter Soldier testimonies occurred during the Vietnam War, and as this movie documents, this important event is nearly obliterated from our history.

Iraq Moratorium: e-mail Congress!
For this month's Iraq Moratorium event, 11th Hour for Peace is asking the peace activists of southeast Michigan to send an email to Congress about the upcoming funding vote. Act now or by Friday, June 20.

Please join us in sending the message below to Congress. We invite you to do one of two things:

1) Click here and write your own letter OR

2) Copy the letter below and paste it in the text box provided here.

Your letter will be emailed to Congress and to a local paper of your choice.

In solidarity - 11th Hour for Peace

[our recommended letter starts here]

I oppose Congress funding the occupation of Iraq. It is clear that some legislators are trying to provide sufficient funding now so that they can avoid holding a funding vote during their campaign for election in November. Even the new GI bill and other attachments for veterans do not mask what they are doing. Important as these things are, these provisions will not stop or fix the future damage of continued occupation in Iraq for another year. Funding the occupation of Iraq is destroying American and Iraqi lives. You must vote down any bill that includes more funding for this destruction of both our nations.

I wholeheartedly support the three demands for action by Congress presented by the Iraq Veterans Against the War at the Winter Soldier Conference held this past March. These demands are:.

• A complete and timely withdrawal of all combat personnel, whether they be U.S. military or private contractors.

• Appropriate reparations to the Iraqi people for the damage done and pain inflicted by the invasion and five-year occupation of Iraq.

• Full benefits and healthcare for all veterans of the U.S. military, especially those who require care and support stemming from combat.

Congress must stop the madness and begin the peace.
