The company handles the logistics for the CIA's so-called "extraordinary rendition" flights -- torture flights. This action honors the International Day in Support of the Victims of Torture. June 26 is the anniversary of the effective date of the UN's Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The UN Convention Against Torture clearly states that no country may "extradite a person to another State where there are substantial grounds for believing that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture." The convention entered into effect on June 26, 1987 and was signed by the U.S. in 1988. This means that the CIA’s practice of "extraordinary rendition" -- outsourcing the interrogation of suspected terrorists to countries known to practice torture -- violates U.S. as well as international law. San Jose-based Jeppesen, a Boeing subsidiary, has been accused of providing logistics for those "extraordinary rendition" flights. The U.S. Justice Department intervened in a lawsuit against Jeppesen, claiming that state secrets would be revealed if the lawsuit were allowed to go ahead. Wouldn’t there be a general outcry and condemnation? Should law-breakers be able to do business freely in our city? Why is Jeppesen still a respected member of the San Jose business community? Iraq Moratorium, Peace Action-Wisconsin, Milwaukee Impeachment Committee, Marquette Center for Peacemaking On the eve of Iraq Moratorium #10, a leading national activist for peace and impeachment, David Swanson, will speak on “Peace, Impeachment & Election Day: Which Comes First?" Swanson will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, in Cudahy Hall, 1313 W. Wisconsin Ave., on the Marquette University campus. His talk is sponsored by the Iraq Moratorium, Peace Action-Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Impeachment Committee, and the Marquette University Center for Peacemaking. The event is free and open to the public. Swanson is co-founder of the AfterDowningStreet.org coalition, creator of ImpeachCheney.org, the Washington director of Democrats.com, and, a board member of Progressive Democrats of America, of the Backbone Campaign, and of Voters for Peace. He serves on a working group of United for Peace and Justice, the nation’s largest peace coalition. He has worked as a newspaper reporter and as a communications director, as press secretary for Dennis Kucinich's 2004 presidential campaign, and briefly as a consultant to Kucinich’s 2008 campaign.
